At this day and age, having a stable job is considered as one of the biggest blessings a person could receive. This is considering the highly unstable global market and the number of companies taking advantage of the practice known as endo or end of contract.
It refers to the firing of employees before they get to their sixth month so that employers can avoid paying for the benefits they should receive upon regularization. This, of course, does not happen to every employee. There are those who are lucky to have a job from which they can receive numerous remunerations, including promotion.
However, a promotion is not easy to come by. One must work hard in order to get one. If you are looking to secure a promotion this year, then you may want to consider these following ways:
Assess Your Performance
The first thing you must do in order to get a promotion is to assess your current role and performance in the company. Think about how you earned the job in the first place as well as the skills you needed to acquire. Now, reflect on how you can build up your skill set in order to outgrow your current position.
Do Your Best
Your boss will not be impressed if you slack off on your current role, even if you suddenly decide to take on more responsibilities from the job that you really want. Instead, you should be performing on the best of your ability with the present tasks you have – no matter how mundane they could be.
Ask for Feedback
Employees, who usually move up the corporate ladder, are those that are willing to learn. They are open to receive feedback – both positive and negative – from their boss as well as their peers. If you do not normally get feedback, ask for one from a “mentor” and learn from what he/she has to say.
Volunteer
Another thing your boss would look for to assess if you are fit for a promotion is whether you have a valuable leadership skill. You can easily show that you have what it takes by volunteering to do tasks such as organising a social event, a day trip, or your annual Christmas party. You could also volunteer to do ordinary stuff like restocking the paper in your printers when they run out.
Improve on Your Networking Skills
It is not enough to show off that you are good in all your current responsibilities. Remember that the people, who are in charge of your promotion, are more likely to give it to someone they trust and know. Therefore, you should begin networking around these people and start gaining their trust.
Ask for a Promotion
Showing initiative, volunteering, and equipping yourself with new skills would be for naught if your boss does not know you want a promotion. Let them know by being direct and concise about it. You must however avoid being pushy and brash because you could end up raising your boss’ hackles instead.
